Legend tells us that the unicorn is a creature usually depicted with the body of a horse, and with a single spiral horn growing out of its forehead. Its blood and horn supposedly have mystical healing properties – in fact a unicorns’ horn is also known as the ‘bane of evil’ as it’s believe it has the ability to dispel anything malignant in water, and can also kill all evil creatures it comes into contact with.

As the media love to remind us, things are tough at the moment, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets to the end of the month and wonders where my dosh has disappeared to!

So to work it all out, I use the Note Couture Expenses Tracker. It’s good for 6 months with weekly and monthly pages on which to write up expenses, and a front cover – all of which are personalisable, it’s spiral bound along the left side (ie: the shortest side) and has a white PVC front cover (same as the spiral bound notebooks, but without the logo).

There’s space to note whether your expenditure has been paid in cash or by credit card (saves a nasty surprise from the credit card company at the end of the month) and columns at the end of each week/month so you can work out if you’re over or under your budget.

It’s a good idea to use it for, say, three months until you get your head around what’s happening to your money, and then what I tend to do, is use it for a few weeks every couple of months - a terrific reminder as to where all the ‘spare coins’ go. And yes, I can confirm that I do spend (gulp) $31.50 on take out caffe lattes each week – it’s scary isn’t it – that’s just a week’s worth of large lattes. Hmmm – thank goodness I don’t have any other vices!

Cold and flu season is almost upon us, and if you’re anything like most Australian families that means kids taking days off school. Some reports suggest that Australian kids miss around eight days of school a year on average, but don’t feel too bad about your resident hypochondriac because recent media reports reveal that high-school students in South Australia miss a whopping 27 days a year.
